Synopsis

Constantinople, 1876.

Nikola Tesla sacrifices his brother and thousands of civilians to sway the Russo-Turkish War. Sixteen years later, he has built something impossible on a remote Vermont mountaintop to resurrect Dane:

A monstrous tree that fuses metal and flesh.

But in his desperate experiments, Nikola sends a message across the void of space, awakening a vast, cosmic entity and its ancient, earth-bound high priest.

As the eastern seaboard erupts into an eldritch war zone of Lovecraftian nightmares, Tesla must battle back to a weapon hidden on Long Island, powerful enough to kill a god.

Whether by fate or God’s providence, others are swept into the fight: a sharpshooter with a deadly smile; a wandering priest whose soul is as scarred as his body; and an Irish miner piloting a steam-powered exoskeleton.

But Tesla alone faces a dreadful choice: cling to the past, or sacrifice everything to save the world he helped condemn.

Dreadful Tendencies is a dark fusion of alternate history and cosmic horror, with a trim of steampunk filigree that forges a tale of obsession, faith, and the terrible price of defying mortality.

★★★★★

“Jade Michael Scott’s Dreadful Tendencies is fantastic steampunk horror, and the alternate nineteenth century feels realistic. The machinery is brilliant, especially the Sultan’s twenty-ton scorpion walker, whose six armored legs carry a cannon-filled body across the Turkish countryside. I love the prose, which gives the setting a vocabulary that feels born from this world. Calling Luther Davidson’s order of mechanically equipped priests “Mechangelists” is perfect, since the word instantly tells you what they are. The horror is great for the same reason, with Scott twisting a mechanical imagination into something genuinely gruesome. The Doctor’s steam-driven bone saw is a great example, using a miniature coal furnace and engine to power its toothed chain. Well written and wildly inventive, readers who enjoy historical steampunk with cosmic horror will adore this.”
